Inland Imaging Introduces New Bone Marrow Biopsy Procedure; First in the Northwest.
Inland Imaging has introduced a new bone biopsy procedure that greatly reduces pain and exam time to the patient. They are the first site in the Northwest to utilize the OnControl, Vidacare system that allows interventional and orthopedic radiologists to quickly and easily acquire bone marrow samples for diagnosis or treatment of bone cancer.
The process for accessing bone marrow had been largely unchanged for half a century, taking nearly an hour to complete with added difficulty to both clinicians and patients. Last year more than 600,000 bone marrow diagnostic procedures were done in the U.S. with an estimated 3.9 million globally. Prior to introducing the OnControl system, the procedure would many times be painful for the patient due to the strenuous nature of obtaining the marrow.
For patients, the new procedure will greatly decrease discomfort and anxiety during bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, leading to a reduction in the need for analgesia and sedation. For Inland Imaging interventional and orthopedic radiologists, the procedure is a much faster and easier, taking only 15 to 20 minutes to acquire a sample.
The development of the OnControl™ Aspiration System by Vidacare for bone marrow aspirations is the first effort in decades to improve the safety, control, and comfort of the aspiration procedure.
Utilizing what looks like a standard home drill, clinicians introduce the tip of the needle through skin and gently press through tissue until they meet the bone. Upon contact with bone cortex, the radiologist gently squeezes the trigger, allowing the needle to penetrate the bone. The drill is removed, leaving the needle inserted in the bone. A sample is then removed from the bone for clinical evaluation.
Inland Imaging interventional and orthopedic radiologists are specially trained to complete the exam and work closely with OnControl representatives to master the new procedure. They learn proper appropriateness guideline to best help all patients that present challenges, including those with hard bone cortex, those with osteoporosis or fragile pelvises, and those for whom have previously had difficulty or pain during other procedures. Currently, six Inland Imaging radiologists have been trained to perform the new biopsy procedure.
The OnControl Biopsy System is FDA-cleared and CE-marked. It has been developed with the goals of improving patient and clinician comfort, ease of use, and reliable core capture. The procedure utilizes the use of computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy to guide the biopsy needle to the appropriate position. This new system has been commercially available in the U.S. and international markets since summer of 2009.

About Vidacare
Vidacare has developed an exclusive technology platform that has utility across a broad spectrum of medical specialties for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. The technology allows clinicians to access the interior of bones (the intraosseous space) quickly and relatively painlessly via the most significant design advance in decades- incorporating simplicity, efficacy, patient comfort, and cost effectiveness.
The intraosseous space is among the most important areas of the anatomy through which life-saving fluids and medications can be delivered to the central circulation within seconds. Gaining access to this space can also yield important clinical information in oncology, regenerative medicine, and other disciplines.
